Two Vehicle Fatal Crash Following Hit and Run

On Friday morning, July 8, there was a two vehicle fatal crash on the eastbound U.S 90 Service Road.

According to Louisiana State Police the crash happened shortly before 10.15 a.m. on the eastbound U.S. 90 Service Road at LA Hwy 675 in Iberia Parish. Rakeem Blakes, aged 24 of Bossier City was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer eastbound on the U.S. 90 Service Road and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. He then crossed over into the westbound lane and hit a 1990 Kenworth being driven by 69 year old Billy Romero of New Iberia, LA.

The Ford Explorer then caught fire and Blakes suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. It is not know if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Romero was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Romero submitted to a breath test and was not impaired and toxicology samples were taken from Blakes for the relevant analyses to be carried out. However, during the investigation, it was discovered that Blakes had just been involved in a hit and run on U.S. 90 near the Broussard area.

The investigation is ongoing.
