On Friday, February 20, two men were killed in a single vehicle accident.
According to the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office the accident happened early in the morning, around 1.30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Julia Street when a vehicle drove through a fence on the Center Street Elementary School around the playground, hit a utility pole and then veered into the middle of the school’s playground.
When police arrived they found two occupants in the vehicle, who were New Iberia residents Shaylin Thorne, aged 27, and 29 year old Craig Webber. One of the two men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to a local hospital where he then died.
Although the investigation is ongoing, police suspect that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash and toxicology results are pending.
The following morning workers arrived to fix the fence and clean up the debris before the children arrived for school.
