Trial for Alleged Hitting and Killing a Cyclist to Begin

On Tuesday January 19, the trial began of a man who is accused of hitting and killing a cyclist.

The trial took place around 18 months after 43 year old Fitzpatrick Doucette of Kaplan allegedly hit 30 year old cyclist Lon Lomas with his car when Lomas was cycling east on Highway 92 near Milton in July 2014.

Lomas actually drowned as the collision caused him to become unconscious and fall into a ditch filled with water. Although he suffered no external injuries, as he was unable to get out of the ditch he drowned and Doucette did not stop and render aid.

Shortly after the crash Doucette went to the police station in his damaged vehicle and police suspected he might have been involved. He was arrested and charged with negligent homicide, hit and run death, driving under suspension and failure to drive only on the right side of the road. He left jail having posted bond and has pleaded not guilty.

Lomas was a native of Eunice native and living in Youngsville. He was a keen cyclist and athlete who took part in triathlons and duathlons.
