As students head back to school in Lafayette, St. Martin, and St. Landry Parishes, motorists are being warned to be careful and reminded of the ban on mobile devices.
According to Lafayette police, roads will be busier than they have been over the summer as parents take their children back to school and they ask drivers to be additionally careful, slow down to the speed limit, watch out for children and the school crossing guards.
Police have also reminded motorists of the hands free rule which is a law which came into effect last year but was not enforced due to the lack of signage. This year however it is being enforced in some of the school zones where signs are now posted prohibiting drivers from using mobile devices in those zones, for any reason whether talking or texting.
