The mother of a Lafayette woman who was killed in an April accident on Johnston Street has filed suit against Honda Motor Company and the maker of the defective air bag.
On April 9, 22 year old Kylan Rae Langlinais died in hospital in Lafayette four days after having driven her 2005 Honda Civic into a utility pole in the 2000 block of Johnston Street. She died due to a severed carotid artery which is consistent with what happened to others when the Takata air bag exploded spraying the driver with flying metal. As a result of the injury, which was the only serious injury she had, she died from loss of blood.
The suit claims that Takata and Honda knew the air bag was defective and a recall notice arrived for Langlinais’ Honda just a few days after her death.
Takata air bags have now been associated with at least 100 injuries and six deaths and led to numerous lawsuits. It appears that the first known problem with the airbag happened in Alabama in 2004 but nothing was done until 2008 with the first small recall of only just over 4,000 vehicles. Now over 14.2 million have been recalled.
